Lacrosse was invented by our ancestors.
As a means to increase strength, stamina, speed and teamwork, the game was played to honor our Creator, to decide political disputes or even as a mechanism to assist the healing of spectators. Over time and through contact with Europeans, etc…. the game changed with more rules and defined playing areas.
However, the sport has always remained a big part of the Kahnawake sports landscape. Lacrosse is part of Haudenosaunee culture and is known as the Creator’s Game and a Medicine Game.
Today, there are three main ways to play organized lacrosse;
a) Box Lacrosse
b) Field Lacrosse
c) As a Traditional Medicine game.
The focus of the KMMLA is box lacrosse, with future possibilities to extend to Field Lacrosse.
Prior to 1990, Kahnawake took part in the Quebec Lacrosse Association. In 1990, lacrosse ceased operations due to the Oka Crisis. Prior to that, the Kahnawake Mohawks participated in Quebec’s Minor Lacrosse Association. In 1992 the Kahnawake Mohawks Minor Lacrosse Association was accepted to play in the Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) as it was seen as a) an increase in competition b) allowed Kahnawake to play against fellow Iroquois teams such as Akwesasne, Six Nations and Tyendinaga and c) It eliminated the language barrier.
